Symposium: Post-Carbon World

Brooklyn Law School is holding its Trager Symposium – Post-Carbon World: Advances in Legal and Social Theory on February 19.

The story of energy is one of profound transition. In little more than a century, the world economy moved from wood to coal to oil and gas to synthetic fuels and, more recently, to renewable sources. With these changes came shifts in energy markets, the structure of firms, and the scale of risks and attempts to coordinate responses to those risks. While fossil fuels continue to drive the world economy, nations have begun to adopt a green industrial policy, and social movements demand that, to avoid catastrophic climate change, we must leave much of our remaining burnable carbon, including most Arctic oil and Canadian tar sands, in the ground.  The Post-Carbon World brings together legal scholars and social theorists whose work engages these concepts, to promote new directions in research on the green energy transition.
